Target set to be a fashion powerhouse

Target's been having designers contribute to their women's clothing collections for a while now and most of them have been highly successful. Running along the same lines as H&M (who's Comme des Garcons line comes out so soon and it going to be available in NYC and looks ADORABLE), the Target lines tend to be more available in terms of location and cost.
The newest designer to contribute is Thakoon who's old school design powerhouse has been revamped in the past pret-a-porter collections and seems to want to branch in a more massively produced direction. Judging by the preview photos of the collection, which will be available starting Christmas, and by the reviews of it so far it does seem like you should keep these clothes stored until better weather unless you wanted to be miss tropicana at your job/office/current location. Not really my style but still loving the collaboration!

dios mio long time no post!

between working 50 hour weeks, going out and ultimately sleeping 4 hours a day i haven't had the energy to write anything. it would take forever to try to fill in what has been going on (lots of post CMJ/halloween action but we'll disregard it?) but shall put in better effort to keep blogging.
It's funny because I find that just like with everything else, blogging is something that everyone will get super pumped about for the first couple weeks committing oneself to it nearly religiously. I'm not quite sure what it is that as a blogger one wishes to achieve apart from maybe the desire to share information, make connections, and be heard. Personally, I'm hoping that it'll be an easier way to keep in touch with people that I care for but don't have the time to communicate with and although it really isn't as personal as an email, it's still a nicer and less creepy way of knowing what someone's up to without resorting to facebook or myspace type stuff. Done rambling....

first outfit of the day post

so I wasn't sure whether I was ever going to do what all other fashion related blogs do (taking pictures of outfits...) but I'll give it a shot. How's this for a day at the office? (ha I feel so vain...)

*shirt+sweater = h&m , pants= paper cloth denim, boots = steve madden*

jewelry i wish i could afford

i'd heard about prada releasing a jewelry line and not only was I in disbelief but I also thought it would appeal to upper east side fashionistas and the like only. their jewelry line, from photos i've seen, is actually great with some 'hardware' like touches to the (probably) great gold and materials. Two of my favorites below: I have not even inquired or tried to find out pricing just to actually make the desire for items below still a possibility in my head.

Happy Halloween!

hope you all eat too much candy corn and party party tonight if you so desire... or watch scary movies.... many events going on tonight in boston, more to follow

Obama madness

thanks to adriano for this exquisite photo from Dorothy's Gallery in Paris. Elections in less than a week and if you're foreign like me (and can't have a say... sigh) you'll be hoping that others make the right choice... interesting painting?

new brit music for you

so apparently there are two new bands to keep an eye out for
both British and already media friendly (and signed if I may add), they seem to be creating some sort of buzz.
The first, the White Lies, are currently in the US touring with Glasvegas (funny cause I personally think the White Lies actually have it going rather than glasvegas..) and deliver a very brit early U2 vibe.
www.myspace.com/thewhitelies

the second band is a little more 'out there'- their instrument use and just song structures are a little more unconventional. Also their sound is a lot more electro based than the White Lies' as you can hear if you go here:

thoughts anyone?

who's excited? LOST is back soon

trailer for the next season of Lost coming back in 2009! woot
(note: i used to not be addicted to this show but i've somehow been sucked in, if you don't watch the show then don't even bother with the trailer, you'll be SO confused.... yes i nearly said lost... hah)

Bazaar Bizarre soon!

i'm getting a little ahead of myself with this little bit of news but Bazaar Bizarre is hitting up Boston again on December 7th @the castle on arlington st (downtown). it's a huge arts and crafts fair but don't go thinking it as a patchouli only-bead necklace-'i havent bathed in a week' type market. They have real awesome things along the lines of the SoWa open markets but slightly more....umm bizarre?

Brief weekend CMJ recap

just a little random note-
CMJ was fun although I really only got to see the Skewer/Planetary Group Showcase @Piano's on Friday afternoon which was overall good. Ludlow Street was gushing with people by the early evening and the LES was very much taken over by the usual friday night crowd and CMJ-badge-clad college radio station people and photogs/bloggers.
Missed, or rather, didn't think of going into the cake shop early enough to see Cut Off Your Hands and Takka Takka (who I REALLY wanted to see).
CMJ is weird though, seems like it's more for the people who run whatever music business is left- it's a big buffet of musicians being served on plates while college radio/journals/bloggers/record execs/managers fish around. weird
not to say this weekend was without excitement- not only did the Saturday BBQ CMJ party that was supposed to take place at The Yard get cancelled, but while on travel with the motley guys from Passion Pit there were some (serious) van problems. Oh and you have to love nyc in monsoon season (or that's what it felt like....)
Overall a good weekend, I didn't take any photos nor does it need more description- CMJ is meh

Fun on a tuesday? YES! - Ice cream social@Great Scott

tomorrow night- be there! $7 or $5 if you are dressed up in 50-60s garb! AND free ice cream floats from 10-11:30!!! Oh and did I mentioned Chris Devlin from SpankRock djing?

heels heels heels, newest obsessions

after surfing the web for hours these are currently a big question mark, which one? loving the fact that heels not only can be daytime or nighttime shoes but that they are also comfortable! woo

(steve madden, aldo, john fluevog X2)

the new Alek Wek? just her niece

Chanel je t'aime!

if you're going to nyc anytime soon definitely check out the new Chanel installation/exhibit smack in the center of Central Park! I'm super psyched to go down friday to catch the last of CMJ and might consider taking an earlier (rather an EVEN earlier) bus down to see this! It's Chanel, it's NYC.... oh my! new york magazine article below:

Pumpkin fest

in true boston fashion, the Pumpkin Fest in City Plaza was a little disappointing. Granted there were a lot of people and we didn't get around to it til 4 after many of the fun family packed events had already finished!
Because of all the people we weren't able to carve ourselves a pumpkin (looong lines) and didn't hang around too much because it was freezing and in the shade. really creative carving though.
Oh and Boston, never have Pumpkin Fest or any Festivity the same weekend as a college football game (thanks BC for the crowded B and C lines), the Head of the Charles Regatta, AND BU family weekend...

CMJ HAS BEGUN!

get your shows here kids!

considering it's past fashion all over....

would it be wrong to resort back to these?
could be a cool alternative to your average boot. but whatever happened to the price of old school stuff (converse, keds, etc)?

love from sweden

lovely Lykke Li's new video?

Breaking it up – alternative live video. Filmed by: Christian Haag from Lykke Li on Vimeo.

This weekend's events - hurray

so a bunch of stuff is going on this weekend and alas it's supposed to be sunny but chilly (did I hear someone say pumpkin spice latte and cookies?). Most are geared towards 'family' day events but hey it's the season to get all cozy and shtuff....
-first off, saturday 10/18 marks the annual Boston Pumpkin Festival (http://www.campsunshine.org/pumpkinfestival/boston.html) which is taking place in City Plaza right downtown from noon-8pm! last year Boston broke the guiness book of records record for most lit jack-o-laterns in one spot at one time and this is sort of a 'pre-halloween' treat! expect a lot of people, kids, pastries and pumpkins. Also, it's FREEEEE
-Another ongoing thing you all should do if you're in an area that allows it is to go Apple Picking before the season's over! you can just google the trillions of orchards there are in MA and new england in general!

- if you are willing to scalp tickets and or already have them, check out Ra Ra Riot playing at the Middle East Downstairs this saturday night! Tickets are sold out (which never REALLY means you can't possibly get in). Also playing with them are Walter Meego and The Morning Benders. (www.myspace.com/rarariot)
- Fan of art? Today is the innagural day for the 29th Anniversary of the Fort Point Studios! Today (friday) studios open 4-7pm and Sat/Sun 11am-6pm. There are about half a dozen buildings full of art, crafts, sculpture, etc. Only downside? It's not extremely T accessible- find all the info at the website below!
http://www.fortpointarts.org/cgi-bin/FPAC?s=open_studios
- The Brattle is celebrating bikes by hosting the Boston Bike Film Festival starting tonight! "Starting Friday night,
October 17, 2008 and continuing on Saturday night, they'll be showing work from filmmakers nationwide including short films, feature length and animated films." Bring your bike and best tricks (or dreams of being able to do them) http://www.bostonbikefilmfest.org/
- Didn't think MIT was dorky enough? Think again- this sunday is the last MIT Swapfest/Flea Market of the year til next April. You can find anything from motherboards, mixing equipment, video games, consoles, and anything you would not admit to secretly loving. There is a $5 buy in if you're looking to sell but if not def stop by and check out the 'scene'! Start time is 9am-2pm (9am on a sunday? cmon!) @
MIT Albany Street Garage- Corner of Main and Albany Streets
- Oh and if you care, Diplo is playing tonight at Middle East Downstairs
- It's friday = THE PILL at Great Scott in Allston. Always a funnerific time!

- Advisory : The 44th Head of the Charles Regatta is here this weekend. This means: traffic, traffic, slow Red Lines, people, traffic, pandemonium. Don't tell me I didn't warn you.

More events to follow- I'll let you marinate on these....
oh and for those who missed the Yelle show in Boston, here is a picture from fellow blogger The World Traveler- can you spot her?

Thursday, October 16, 2008

oh no you didn't....

this shiiiit --------->

upsets me :(
(the america issue? maybe i just don't get it?)

Sophomore = awesome new clothing line

born in nyc personal-favorite LES, Sophomore is a relatively new clothing line meant to be 'accessible' and back to the basic idea of jeans and a t-shirt. The fall 08 collection is pretty sweet for women and men. Unfortunately for us MA residents the only way to get any of Sophomore's clothes is online but if you live in NYC or California your chances of acquiring the collection is exponentially better.
Absolutely love this fall coat on her and cool color on him (don't like the model tho... :/) for more info go to http://www.sophomorenyc.com

show tonight u might want to not miss

eccentric-crazy mouthed-hot-french electro pop singer Yelle is playing at the Roxy in the theater district in Boston. Opening acts are Funeral Party and Kapt10kurt - doors @7 show @8 (supposedly).
Don't know who Yelle is? oh my check her myspace out (www.myspace.com/iloveyelle) and most definitely watch her music videos like whoa!

holy shieeeet- "Sleepyhead" video

our good friends Passion Pit have released their video for crowd favorite "Sleepyhead". The video is all done with individual photo frames and is terribly full of vintage flavor.

<3 s it

speaking of Bomb the Bass...awesome video

great video for song "Butterfingers" - it's great because the controller is actually 'playing' the song!

CMJ music marathon is (nearly) here- yeaaaah

after a couple sick days i've got quite a few post and updates-
first off though, as most of you may know, next week in New York city is music/arts/party week because CMJ Music Marathon is in town! anyone in nyc let me know if you're down to catch some shows! I'll only be able to catch a couple days because of work but super excited to hear new music all day and to follow certain bands as they venture through nyc.
They've finally put up the official schedule of CMJ on their website (even though they seem to be missing some dates/venues that I know are getting played?): anyhow check it at:
http://cmj.com/marathon/showcase_index.php
artists to look out for (known and not): Lykke Li, Bomb the Bass, Takka Takka, Passion Pit, Vivian Girls, The Whip, Fujiya&Miyagi, Kid:Nap:Kin, Broken Social Scene, Au, Friendly Fires, Pretty Good Dance Moves, Deerhoof, Mumpsy and the Delays amongst hundreds of others!

best thing about the search thing is that you can search by band too! woooo

website for today!

somehow i ended up on someone's profile on this website and found it genius! It's great to be able to access all the photos that people take of outfits all in one place rather than having to surf through 20 blogs. You can see people's style depending on type and location of where they're posting from. You can also see other people's stuff and you can go as far as joining the 'community' by registering. not sure what extra stuff you can do with that because i don't think i'm up for signing up for yet another thing.... but something you can do is rate whether people are 'chic' or not. good fun and good ideas

saturday fun

it's the weekend again and what better way to have a great time than to spend some time outside frolicking during the day (the commons look fantastic right now!) and catching a great show at night. recommended for saturday night is going to the Middle East Downstairs to catch French Kiss Records veterans Les Savvy Fav with awesome new French Kiss-ers Passion Pit (they're so cute!).
The show starts around 9 and is $15 and +18! for more info go to
www.mideastclub.com or check out Passion Pit's myspace page www.myspace.com/passionpitjams

make sure you wear your dancing shoes kids!

fancy finds

with halloween coming up I'm sure everyone is looking for something creative to dress up as. If, like myself, you'll be working part of the night you might want to consider something more subtle that'll work all day.
so I found these amongst other great ideas for a fashionable and different halloween. you can go to shuuemura.com or to any of their stores nationwide and get yourself a pair of fancy face eyelashes (starting at $20-$50).
beats the weird contact lenses anyday!

little secret

by publishing this post I nearly feel like I'm putting myself in competition with other Bostonians that might be reading this but here goes... tomorrow Diesel is going to be selling a particular model of womens and mens jeans for.... $50!
It's the brand's 50th anniversary so they thought it would be a nice little present for their customers and we love em for it! at the newbury street store (only one in Boston I believe) they apparently have about 80 pairs of womens and mens.
The models are the Matic for the ladies, and the
Zeever for men. you can get a little preview at diesel.com !

some nyc fashion week action

now that fashion weeks are wrapping up everywhere, it's time to go back and really see what trends are first of all wearable and secondly accessible to people who can't drop serious cash on clothes (hello urban renewals!). Seems like compared to milan, paris, london and all the other greats, New York definitely went a little more urban by keeping on the utility side of things. Rag&Bone and Alexander Wang (two pictures shown below respectively) both seemed to capture the menswear for women feel that seems to be coming back. Personally love the fact that this is a style that is feasible in cold Bostonian winters without sacrificing the current-ness of 'trends'. You can view full collections on any major fashion publication website (elle, vogue, etc).

is it really the 90s again?

i came across some really interesting news today thanks to nylon magazine. so remember the shoes that everyone and their mother had/wanted called LA gears? yeah with the bright lights and the little license plate attached? well they're being revamped and apparently the company that makes them is getting resurrected. bad news is, they'll only be available in europe and at a very unfriendly price of $160+... but for your viewing pleasure here is one of the limited editions available.
in other great news - if you also agree that the movies that have been coming out recently aren't worth the $10 dollars then think again. The New England Aquarium has the largest IMAX in the world apparently and from october 3-31st they'll be showing The Dark Knight every day. Check out their website and make sure you get yourself a ticket before it sells out!
speaking of selling out- this year halloween happens to be on a friday and to anyone that frequents allston that means one thing - the pill. They're going to be doing a special halloween night with bands playing as cover bands: this year you will get to see and hear the Strokes, the Kinks and Elastica. More details to come as we near the date but mark your calendars for that too...

parisians know best

photos from elle.com taken @Paris fashion week- i want their outfits

sunday review Baked Fresh + new freshhh music tomorrow night

Baked fresh was actually quite fun- granted it didn't seem much different from any other sunday SoWa open markets but it was a great little day trip. I think I might have had just about the most amazing pumpkin/raisin muffin for starters and the devil incarnate (starbucks) was giving away free coffee and OATMEAL. yes they now make instant oatmeal and sell it for a fortune- oh starbucks you never cease to puzzle me.
i walked away from Baked Fresh with an awesome drape pin from punky's booth actually (punkystyle.com , awesome blog) and a great art print which was not only mad cheap but will look amazing when framed. my friend also found an amazing crown pin and he unfortunately had to undergo various clothing items/objects being placed on him (such as a feather pin, cuuute).
on the awesome side too- tons of great fashion, good music, free parking (!!!) and cuddly labradors/dogs.

if your weekend doesn't want to end tonight then hit up cambridge tomorrow night. Opening for German eletro-pop artist Guten Morgenstern are newcomers Giantess (www.myspace.com/yesgiantess) who's influence can be traced from the best 80s synthy-ness to lionel richie to contemporary indie electronica. they make their official debut tomorrow night at the middle east upstairs. AND DJ Etan will also be playing and you do not want to miss the musical mayhem-goodness that he brings to the house.

tomorrow wake and bake at Baked Fresh

before going off to work all day on this glorious fall saturday i want to leave you with a fun sunday activity.
So every sunday for the past couple months there's been the SoWa open market which is pretty much an arts and crafts mishmash with hundreds of vendors and all that goodness. I've been and other people have and the reviews are usually the same- it's alright but nothing spectacular.
Well... tomorrow they're having a "special" sunday which has been called Baked Fresh! and is to include live music, more stands, more food, as well as an art exhibit and the likes! judging from the hype this event is getting on fashion, arts and crafts and boston based blogs is should be quite good... and the weather's supposed to be a nice sunny 65 degrees...
check it out, it's in the south end (SoWa= south of washington street, boston's trying to NYC itself...) and starts at 10am!

brilliant discovery///Black Cab Sessions

if you're planning on having a lazy friday night to escape the first chills of boston then def check out the Black Cab Sessions . It is along the lines of the Blogotheque Take Away shows (don't know what that is? oh my check it out at www.blogotheque.net) but it's in the back of a british black cab! must sees are Lykke Li, St. Vincent and Beach House!
unlike the blogotheque, the artists are really confined to a small environment so don't expect as much running around as what you've seen other bands do on blogotheque...

www.blackcabsessions.com

bundle ups! xx

de-virginizing blog

i've always put off having a log just because I thought it would take it too much of my time to keep it updated... but at this point- having graduated college and finding myself in the 'working world', I realize that I'm on the computer much more than expected. Hence, this blog.
I'm not quite sure what I'm trying to accomplish here because there are so many blogs that deal strictly with Boston and fashion, and all that good stuff and I feel like they either are highly dedicated to their blogs and/or they're going to have much more info than I am. So what I think I'll try to do is keep this as a way of letting whoever wants to read what interesting thing i've come across on a particular day and events and things to try pay attention to (?).
just because I believe in making things as colorful as possible, I'm going to leave you with lovely pictures of apples in Harvard, MA and a group of crazy apple pickers.
toodles
